Meet the Winemaker: Part 2 of 3-part series – Following the Vintage with Paddy Borthwick
Friday, November 19th @4:00pm PST
I am so excited to continue this series with famed New Zealand winemaker Paddy Borthwick! In this unique experience over the course of one year we will join Paddy to learn about his process and explore the journey of two distinct wines – Left Hand and Right Hand Pinot Noir – from harvest through barrel selection and finally bottling. An incredible way to delve into the evolution of a specific wine and all that goes into the process, while also tasting through a winemaker’s collection of various varietals.
Part 2: Barrel selection and blending Pinot Noir
The Left Hand and Right Hand Pinot Noirs represent the different personalities of the Paddy Borthwick winemaking team in both vineyard and winery. Left Handed winemaker Briony Carnachan (logical, creative and precise) and right handed Vigneron Paddy Borthwick (intuitive, impulsive and thoughtful), have each selected a premium parcel of grapes they believe to be the finest expression of the Borthwick Estate Vineyard. This session we will cover with Paddy how they decide which barrels of Pinot Noir are destined for which wines, and also how they come to the specific selection of 3 barrels each to create the Right Hand and the Left Hand.
To illustrate the nuanced differences, we will be tasting 2 different vintages EACH of the Right Hand and the Left Hand:
2016 & 2018 Left Hand Pinot Noir
2016 & 2018 Right Hand Pinot Noir
BONUS! The first 20 LOCAL* participants to register for the seminar will receive exclusive barrel samples of the
wines that will be blended into the 2021 Left Hand and Right Hand Pinot Noirs!
Purchase wines from Hi-Time here!
These wines are NOT included in the class purchase price, but you will be able to purchase them from Hi-Time Wine Cellars in Costa Mesa! You are, of course, welcome to join the seminar without the wine, but joining the tasting will give you the opportunity to indulge in and appreciate this incredible varietal.
*Local residents includes participants within the Orange County area. In order to receive samples participants will need to pick up at a central location in Orange County between November 17-18. Details to follow for those who qualify.
